Alaya Kala brings the artistic journey of sculptor Adi Gunawan into a new spatial context, tracing the connection between his practice, cultural roots, and the memories that have shaped his work.
Born and raised in Yogyakarta, Adi Gunawan’s practice is deeply connected to his observations of people, relationships, gestures, and everyday experiences. His sculptures often capture moments of human interaction and emotion, transforming personal observations into forms that invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences.
The exhibition takes its name from the Sanskrit words alaya, meaning a place of shelter, and kala, meaning time. Together, they suggest a space where memories, journeys, and traces of the past are held. This idea resonates with Adi’s practice, where the human experience becomes both a subject and a source of memory.
Adi Gunawan’s artistic journey is also closely connected to ANDIs Gallery, a pioneering name in Indonesia’s modern and contemporary art scene since 1990. Through decades of working with artists and collectors, the gallery has built a legacy around nurturing artistic practices and creating meaningful encounters between art and its audience.
Today, this legacy continues through SANKHARA Art, established in 2023 as a new chapter of the ANDIs Gallery story. Representing artists including Adi Gunawan, SANKHARA Art continues to create opportunities for artworks to enter new contexts and conversations.
Alaya Kala becomes one such encounter, a moment where Adi Gunawan’s longstanding artistic practice meets a contemporary audience, while carrying with it the cultural memories and artistic legacy that have shaped his journey.
