Emiria Soenassa (1894–1964) is recognized as Indonesia’s first female painter, an artist who consistently poured her ideas and emotions into her paintings. Throughout her life, Emiria produced numerous works, particularly during her time as a member of PERSAGI (Persatuan Ahli Gambar Indonesia) in 1938. Shortly after, in 1941, she participated in a painting exhibition organized by Bond van Kunstkringen, a Dutch artists’ association that at the time held a special exhibition for Indonesian artists in Batavia.
The works and life spirit of Emiria Soenassa have inspired many artists, art enthusiasts, and especially women. TULOLA Jewelry drew inspiration from her legacy and launched a series of jewelry pieces under the theme “Emiria: Women and Nature,” in harmony with TULOLA’s annual theme.
Happy Salma, founder of TULOLA, stated that Emiria Soenassa was the first female painter in Indonesia to offer a different perspective on women—one that resonates deeply with the spirit of TULOLA.
Sri Luce Rusna, founder and creative director of TULOLA, shared that the blue tones in one of Emiria’s paintings—depicting two female figures immersed in water—became a key highlight of inspiration. The artwork left a lasting impression on her. Emiria’s bold yet free strokes, vibrant colors, and diverse floral and natural forms found in her paintings inspired Sri Luce Rusna to design exaggerated floral motifs for this ArtWear collection.
